Availability of the Hurricane Irene Variety

I'm gonna go ahead and toss this up now because tomorrow's probably gonna be insane and I don't want to forget. So, Hurricane Irene. You might have heard of it and if you're on my Twitter feed, you've definitely seen me talk about it. Well, that thing is gonna rumble over me come Saturday as either as strong cat 2 storm or a cat 1. Either way, it's gonna get nasty here.

I'm heading out to my dad's tomorrow (he's local too) just because I'd feel more comfortable not being alone when this thing shows its ass. But, the situation here after could be pretty bad. I don't know when I'll be back around because of damage and power situations.

As of right now, there probably won't be any evacuations (save for the super coastal areas) and the tidal surge isn't supposed to be awful. The big things with this are gonna be that it's the FREAKING SIZE OF TEXAS and it's gonna dump huge amounts of rain on us.

Seriously, this thing is bearing down (link jacked from notlikejack on Twitter). I'm not excited at all. Wish me luck!

I will do my best! There's still a lot of uncertainty with this storm even as close as it is to me but I think you can expect a lot of rain at the very least. The rest will depend on how she holds together!

It'll be interesting, if nothing else. I'm right there with you, only with more "I lived in Florida" bravado.

My grandparents have done the hurricane boogie up here a few times before, though, and are not terribly concerned, so hopefully it'll all go by with just some windy, heavy rains.

I'm reaaaaaally hoping that it's not as bad as they're forecasting. Really, really hoping. At least it hasn't revved up to cat 4 like they thought so maybe it'll be cat 1 when it rumbles over.

My dad's not too concerned either but my mom is like INSANE WITH FEAR and she's in Indiana. Hoping for the best though! Really hoping!

I think in a non-flood zone away from the shoreline shouldn't be too bad. If you have outdoor furniture or something, I'd secure it down, and then be prepared for power outtages. And check to see if you're in a flood zone.

Flood zone checked! I'm actually looking good on that in my apartment and my dad's the same. No outdoor furniture to secure because of apartment living so yeah, it's just power outages and maybe some downed trees.

The good thing is that we haven't had huge amounts of rain lately so the ground's not super saturated and trees won't just fall over at the first drops.
